SATSUMA: The Romance of Japan

As of 2014 this is my favorite book on satsuma, it does a wonderful job of showing you both extraordinary quality but also pieces you might see at auction regularly. The willingness to show objects of many qualities makes this book valuable to the average collector. Also included is a wonderful index of signatures. A resource sorely needed. The last feature of this book which I am fond of is the way in which Mr. Lawrence approaches Satsuma as a story and engages in the narrative of the decoration of the pieces selected. This interest brings us closer both to Japanese culture but also the fascinated westerners who ordered this porcelain, hungary for its craftsmanship and cultural novelty.
